RELEVANT OVER 50: TYSCOT RECORDS PROVES 50 YEARS CAN STILL SOUND LIKE THE FUTURE

Hey family, it's your girl Humilitee, and you know this magazine exists to prove one thing: relevancy does not have an expiration date. Whether you're a doctor, a musician, or a ministry that's been building for half a century, you have longevity well beyond what any calendar suggests. Today's story is proof.

My recent conversation with Bryant Scott, President of Tyscot Records, has been sitting on my spirit ever since we recorded it. Because relevancy isn't about being new, it's about being needed, generation after generation. Tyscot Records is a masterclass in exactly that.

**HOW IT ALL BEGAN**

Bryant told me the story, and it'll have you shaking your head at how God works. His father, Dr. Leonard Scott, wanted to be a rock musician in his younger years. His father gave him an ultimatum: make it, or go to school. He went to school, and while in dental school, he got saved and put music down entirely to give the Lord his full attention.

Dr. Scott locked himself away for three days to fast and pray, and God gave him ten songs he had never written before.

He brought them to the late Craig Tyson, a gifted organist, and Craig said, "Let's make an album." Their attorney said the songs needed copyrighting, which meant the company needed a name. Tyson's name plus Scott's name became Tyscot, born to protect ten songs God gave a dentist in a hotel room.

Fifty years later, family, it's still real.

**THE ARTISTS WHO CALL IT HOME**

When I asked Bryant to name the artists who've come through Tyscot's doors, he laughed, said he'd probably leave somebody out, and counted over 120 in the label's history. John P. Kee, Deitrick Haddon, VaShawn Mitchell, Bri Babineaux, the Nelson twins, Kelontae Gavin, Tasha Page-Lockhart, and platinum-selling Anthony Brown & group therAPy, just to name a few.

I have to pause for the late Rance Allen. The Rance Allen Group trusted Tyscot with their image and legacy after they were already established stars, and that kind of trust is earned, not given. It took Bryant three years to sign Rance, and their 2003 live recording at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, made during a blizzard with a packed house, gave us "Something About the Name Jesus." Rance, we still feel you.

**WHAT KEEPS IT RELEVANT**

I asked Bryant the question I ask everybody these days: what keeps you relevant when what's new today is old by tonight? No hesitation. Jesus. He told me the true chairman of the board at Tyscot has never been him or his father, it's always been the Lord. That's why, during their VIP reception, they're building an altar, not for show, but as a memorial so the next generation knows who brought them this far.

That, family, is what relevancy looks like at 50 years in. Not chasing trends. Standing on a foundation that doesn't move.

**THE CELEBRATION**

Tyscot Records, the nation's oldest operating Black-owned gospel recording company, is commemorating its 50th anniversary with a Midnight Homecoming Concert on **Thursday, July 23, 2026, at 11:00 p.m.**, held during the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World's 111th International Summer Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Gospel legend John P. Kee, who launched his career with Tyscot, headlines the night. He'll be joined by Tyscot alumni Ruth La'Ontra, Grammy-nominated Jason Clayborn, Bishop Harold Rayford, and a reunion performance from the Christ Church Apostolic Choir, the very choir whose debut album started this whole journey back in 1976. Platinum-selling artist Anthony Brown of Anthony Brown & group therAPy will serve as master of ceremonies.

The evening opens with a VIP Honors Reception at 8:00 p.m., followed by the Homecoming Concert at 11:00 p.m., at the JW Marriott, 10 S. West Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

As Bryant told me himself, "For 50 years, Tyscot has been blessed to provide a platform for artists whose music has strengthened faith, inspired hope, and transformed lives. We are honored to celebrate this achievement in our hometown of Indianapolis during one of the largest gatherings in the church world."
